Get more patients for your clinic in South Africa

The HPCSA bans testimonials, superlatives and touting outright — which rules out most of what agencies elsewhere sell as healthcare marketing, and makes SEO, Google Business Profile and educational content the only strategy that both works and survives scrutiny.

The South Africa market

What actually decides who patients pick here.

South Africa runs two healthcare systems side by side. Roughly one in six people carries medical aid — Discovery, Momentum, Bonitas and their peers — and that minority funds a private sector of genuine depth, concentrated in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. Everyone else depends on public facilities. For private practices this produces an English-first, comparison-driven patient base, a long-established Cape Town medical tourism trade, and the strictest professional advertising code in the English-speaking world.

Medical hubs

The Sandton and Rosebank specialist corridor, the Netcare, Mediclinic and Life Healthcare hospital campuses, Cape Town's plastic-surgery cluster around the city-bowl private hospitals, and the Umhlanga Ridge medical precinct serving KwaZulu-Natal.

Patient catchment

Gauteng, the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal as the three core markets, plus specialist referral flow from Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Zambia, and European cosmetic surgery patients travelling into Cape Town.

Language & channels

South Africa has twelve official languages, but private healthcare search runs overwhelmingly in English across all three metros. Afrikaans matters in parts of the Western Cape and isiZulu in KwaZulu-Natal for community trust and reception-level service, though neither carries meaningful commercial search volume in the specialties we work in.

Cheap by Gulf standards in absolute terms, but the rand's purchasing power makes wasted spend hurt — and because paid claims are constrained by HPCSA rules, organic and Maps do the heavier lifting.

Demand in South Africa

The specialties growing fastest here.

Every specialty has its own patient journey, objections and search behaviour. These are the four where we see the most competitive pressure — and the most opportunity — in South Africa.

/01

Cosmetic & plastic surgery

Domestic cash-pay demand plus an established European medical tourism flow into Cape Town, all inside the tightest advertising rules in the market.

/02

Dentistry & orthodontics

Largely cash-pay beyond basic scheme benefits, so patients compare openly on price, payment plans and proximity.

/03

Dermatology & skin

Long public-sector waiting lists push insured and self-funding patients into private care, and almost every journey starts with a symptom search.

/04

Orthopaedics & sports medicine

Referral-heavy but increasingly patient-initiated, with scheme coverage, pre-authorisation and co-payment questions dominating the research phase.

Compliance in South Africa

Marketing that keeps your licence safe.

Governed by
HPCSA — Health Professions Council of South Africa (with POPIA governing patient data)

HPCSA ethical rules made under the Health Professions Act permit advertising only where it is factual, verifiable and not misleading, and they prohibit canvassing and touting outright. Patient testimonials about clinical outcomes are not permitted. Comparative claims and superlatives — 'best', 'leading', 'most experienced' — are not allowed. Guarantees of results, and inducements or incentives to attract patients, are similarly out. What is permitted is narrow but genuinely useful: name, HPCSA-registered qualifications, practice details, services offered, fees and languages. Separately, POPIA governs how you collect and process patient data, which reaches consent language, enquiry forms and remarketing audiences.

Complaints in South Africa very often originate with peers rather than patients, so a compliant site is a competitive defence as much as an ethical obligation. We build to Booklet 15 by default and keep POPIA-compliant consent on every form.

Compliance is not a constraint we work around — the trust signals that satisfy a regulator are the same ones that convince a patient. We will tell you when something a competitor is doing is not something we will replicate.

Organic consultation requests in 7 months

A Sandton specialist practice had been sold a testimonial-and-superlatives campaign by a generalist agency and had quietly stopped running it after a colleague raised the HPCSA rules. Replacing it with factual procedure pages, scheme-coverage and pre-authorisation explainers, a fully built Google Business Profile per rooms location, and page-weight work for mobile users on metered data produced sustained organic growth — and, unlike the previous approach, nothing on the site needed defending.
